Running dogs and managing our events takes a special person. This position is fun and exciting but it's also very demanding, both physically and mentally. This is a paid position with Luratics, and full training is provided. Luratics is a dynamic San Diego dog sporting events company that's making a difference in the lives of people and animals in our city and beyond.


Lure Coursing is a fun dog chase sport. This is the key position in Lure Coursing on three levels: (1) keeping the dogs safe, (2) keeping the dogs on the lure to their best advantage, and (3) managing the overall event and making sure everyone has fun. The Lure Operator can make or break a dog, literally. Running dogs requires concentration, true concern for the dog's safety, an understanding of breed and individual running styles, an interest in equipment maintenance, a background in pet first aid, and a very light touch for the lure button.

          LO’s get to the field early, lay out the course, set the pulleys and line, then stays late to coordinate and help with breakdown.  This person maintains the equipment during the event.  The LO determines when the field is ready, runs the dogs, and makes any course changes.


  • Time commitment is approximately 10 hours per month, May through September
  • Coordinate and direct setup/breakdown of equipment at the field
  • Coordinate and direct all event crew during the event
  • Determine course layout and then set the field
  • Run dogs on the course using the lure coursing system
  • Manage the field equipment during the event
  • Manage whatever comes up during the event


  • Direct crew: determine and how where the equipment will be set up and assign crew to their duties
  • Determine the field layout then set it up, including: field pulley placement, catch basin, fence (if any), machine placement, batteries, generator, line, etc.
  • Walk the field and direct crew to prep the field (aka, "gopher patrol")
  • Manage the battery charging level throughout the event
  • Manage the line and lures during the event and replace as needed
  • Perform field first aid as needed - to both dogs and people
  • Act as final authority on dog participation based on gait, health, aggression, etc.
  • Coordinate queue with Paddock Master
  • Obtain run sheets from management the day before or the day of the event, and provide them to Table Manager and Paddock Master


  • Finesse and intuition are the hallmarks of a good LO
  • Good hand-eye coordination with a high degree of manual dexterity
  • Honesty, integrity, with an exceptional work ethic
  • High attention to detail
  • Pet first aid training/experience
  • Able to lift and move 45-50 pounds
  • Physical ability to reach, bend, carry, exert physical pressure on tools, etc. This position entails a high degree of physical activity
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • An enormous passion for dogs
  • Ability to have fun under pressure!
